FABLE #12

Brown claims that JESUS was married to Mary Magdalene ("a matter of historical record") and that she had 5 children! No such thing exists in the four Gospels in the Bible, which (unlike Brown's spurious sources) were written when people who were eye witnesses of Christ were still alive and records their testimony, and is diligent in recording the major events of Christ's ministry, and marriage certainly would be one of them! As faithful students of Scripture note, the Bible offers quite candid and sober details of it's subjects characters and lives, as needed, and an exclusion of a most noteworthy event as the marriage of it's principal subject is both uncharacteristic and unwarranted. There is not even a hint that Jesus was married in Scripture, and among the many recorded events in the life of Christ, the only marriage that the Lord Jesus had any connection with is one in which He and His disciples were invited guests (John. 2:1, 2). This wedding was for someone else, and was where Jesus performed His first miracle (2:11). It is only sometime later that the Lord cast 7 demons out of Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9), and who became one of the followers of Jesus, not His wife.

Seeing therefore that there is no valid Biblical substance for Brown's imaginary marriage, he – through the use of his fictional “scholars” Leigh Teabing and Robert Langdon – must resort to another source, yet the only source that Brown finds to support this fantastic claim is a one of the “Gnostic” texts, the so-called "gospel of Phillip.” Gnosticism was a metaphysical belief system that developed over a period of time in contradiction to the teachings of both Old Testament Judaism and Christ and His apostles, but knowing where the power is, it sought to misuse the authority of Christ and the Scriptures for their own purposes. Consistent with their metaphsicalism, Gnosticism basically saw all physical/material things as evil and some did not even believe Jesus had a physical body, and instead of repentance from real sin and faith in the risen the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and salvation, and which the most common man could understand (by God's grace), Gnosticism essentially taught that "redemption" was to be achieved through esoteric, mystical knowledge from one of their elites (which “salvation by merit” is typical of cults),

Brown's gospel of Phillip was part of these texts, and unlike the thousands of manuscripts that support Biblical texts, the spurious gospel of Phillip is known from only three fragmentary manuscripts, and has long ago been recognized as a false gospel, belonging to the same class as other similar works of fiction which appeared after the true Biblical gospels were preached and written. One example is the Gnostic “gospel according to Thomas” which has Jesus excluding women from the kingdom of God, and then saying that He would turn Mary into a man so that she could enter! In contrast, the Biblical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were recorded soon after Jesus death and resurrection and were based on eye witness accounts, and offer salvation to all who will truly accept the Lord Jesus. These records, though offering different aspects of Christ, complement each other to provide a full dimensional revelation of “the Lord of glory.

In addition, Brown hypocritically writes, “every faith in the world is based on fabrication.” Fabrication?! If any faith is built on manifest lies it is that which the Da Vinci Code would supplant all others with. No, not every religion is built on fabrication Mr. Brown, the faith of Christ, Biblical, saving faith in the Way the Truth and the Life Jesus Christ, like that our spiritual forefather Abraham, is well attested to, historically, archaeologically and experientially, as no other faith is! In stark and damming contrast is the faith which the Da Vinci code promotes, far more than even any other major religion, a faith verifiably built on fallacies and fornication, with every proof offered for it's fantasies (here and others) easily shown to spurious! Unlike the Christian faith, which has not only survived by multiplied despite being persecuted (including by Rome) more (along with Jews) than any other faith, Gnosticism, as ill defined as it is, much less the DVC version of it, has little substance or spiritual legacy, and exists as a parasite feeding on the substance of Biblical faith. To those involved – if they are looking for reality and not to rationalize sin away – the Scriptures cry,

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?” (Isaiah 55:2).

Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mathew 11:28).

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).
